SKIDMARKS - Acid Software £25.99
---------------------------------
Skidmarks hey? That's a name that could have caused a stir a bit like Dong!
did. Thankfully, everybody seems to be a bit more grown up about it this
time. Anyway, on with the review.
Inside the box, you are presented with 4 disks and a cheap-looking manual
(compared to a standard MicroProse one anyway). The four disks are as follows
Program disk: This contains the actual program (funny that, heh?) and the
car graphics for non-AGA Amigas. This disk is not copy-protected and
installed perfectly well on my hard drive.
2 Track disks: These two disks each contain 6 tracks each.
The disks are copy-protected (and if you've any sense, you'll leave them that
way!).
AGA Car Graphics disk: Guess what's on this disk? It is also copy-protected.
I don't know why, as the non-AGA graphics aren't.
Upon loading, you are presented with a comms set-up screen.
This is perhaps the most powerful part of the game. It enables up to four
people to play the game either on linked up Amigas or via modem. In fact,
Acid Software are planning to set up a modem championship in the near future.
On a standard A1200, only two of the four types of cars can be used in a race
due to the memory. If you load for hard drive, then it is only one.
However, booting from disk and only using non-AGA graphics, all four car
types can be used in a race. This greatly increases the enjoyment as
everybody can have their favorite vehicles.
The four cars available are Porsche, Camaro (with monster truck sized wheels)
Monster Truck (Big Foot type) and a Dirt Buggy. The Porsche has the highest
top speed of all and handles well on the tarmac tracks. However, it slips and
slides its way on the dirt and mud tracks. The Camaro is my favorite.
It handles terribly, but it goes fast on all surfaces and is generally fun.
The Monster Truck, while having excellent road holding even on the
slipperiest of tracks, is vvvvveeeeerrrryyyyy sssllloooooowwww. The Dirt
Buggy is generally a load of rubbish, being neither fast nor having good road
holding. However, if you find winning against the computer too easy, stick
them in a Porsche and jump in a Dirt Buggy. It makes for a very challenging
race and is most enjoyable when you win.
That is the best thing about Skidmarks. It is truly an enjoyable and playable
game and is great value for money (especially for me, as I was a beta tester
and got mine for only £10). With modem link up and new car and track disks
in preparation, it looks like skidmarks will be a game that will be played
for months, if not years to come. Brilliant and thoroughly recommended.

LIBERATION - MINDSCAPE £34.99
-----------------------------
Liberation, looks good, sounds good, but is it all it's made out to be?
Read on to find out.
First of all, I must point out one LARGE factor in this review.
I am reviewing the CD32 version of Liberation because I purchased the A1200
version and it would not play from a HardDrive. I was very dissapointed in
this, as the only way to get the full benefit from the game is to have it
installed on a HardDrive. The game installed onto the HardDrive OK, but
it would only show the Animation and a loading screen. That was (and still
is) as far as the game will load.
This aside, on with the review....
The object of the game is to guide your four droids through the streets and
find and rescue some prisoners.
Graphically the game is excellent and the music and spot effects are also
very atmospheric!
To say that this is a BIG game would be like saying The Empire State Building
would fit in my Living Room!!!!
The game is Huge,Astronomic,Colossal,Gigantic and Enormous all rolled into
one! It will take you Weeks if not Months to finish this game!
Whilst walking around the streets, you will come accross ALL forms of life,
like Daleks,Dinosours,K-9 and even little Scottish blokes in Grey Capes ?!
You can talk and trade with ANYONE in the game and can even go into the local
Bars and order a drink and chat up the females at the bar!!!!!
When talking to people, you are given information on the whereabouts of the
prisoners, but it is still up to you to find where the places are that you
are told of! If all else fails, just jump into a Taxi and tell it where to
take you to! (They don't have drivers in the future you know!)
If the game itself had loaded from my HardDrive, I would be writing a LONG
review about this excellent game, but as it didn't, I am a little bit
disillusioned in whether this game is really all its made out to be.
I mean, If it says HardDrive Compatible on the box, then you expect it to
work properly from one.
If it wasn't for this, I would recommend the game to EVERYONE, but until
the publishers iron out this glitch I suggest that you buy a CD32 to play
it on !!!!
Darren.
